Land Rover Unveils Plans to Debut a Hydrogen-Powered Vehicle This Year

June 29th, 2021 by

Do you ever have those moments where you see “2021” written in the date and secretly feel like that’s supposed to be some faraway sci-fi year instead of RIGHT NOW? Well, a recent announcement from Jaguar Land Rover is already making headlines because it represents a bold step forward towards a hi-tech, energy efficient future.

In mid June, the UK auto manufacturer announced plans to develop a hydrogen-powered vehicle that will go into testing during the back half of this year. While Jaguar Land Rover isn’t the only car brand working on hydrogen vehicles, they bring a pedigree to the technology that’s unmatched by any other company on the market.

This vehicle will be designed in tandem with the newest version of the company’s signature Land Rover Defender, with which it will share a platform and several design elements. Not only is this vehicle expected to be the single most energy efficient Land Rover on the market, it’s likely to be one of the most efficient cars EVER.

Jaguar Land Rover hasn’t been shy about their visions towards a carbon-neutral future, and this announcement adds some tailwind to an already impressive push into the market. Just a few years ago, hydrogen fuel cells in cars seemed like an utterly impossible, prohibitively complex undertaking. Now, it’s just around the corner.

If you’re not familiar with how hydrogen fuel cells work, the process is actually rather simple, even if all the engineering that makes it possible is not. Vehicles that use hydrogen fuel cells feature purely electric motors that are powered more than hydrogen gas. A basic knowledge of chemistry will tell you that hydrogen is A LOT more available and affordable than refined gasoline is.

When the motor is running, hydrogen batteries combine and oxygen in order to produce electricity, which then powers the car. The result is a vehicle that gives you the best of both worlds: the fuel storage capacity and drive distance of a combustion engine with the nonexistent emissions of a plug-in electric motor.

As the process that turns hydrogen gas into energy only produces water vapor, these vehicles don’t produce tailpipe pollution when they’re driven. The prospect of a car that only produces a faint amount of steam from it’s tailpipe is becoming a bigger and bigger deal as discussions about the future of clean energy grow louder and louder.

The brand’s commitments to this clean future go far beyond a single hydrogen powered vehicle. In fact, Jaguar Land Rover also announced earlier this year that it’s Jaguar brand will go all-electric from the year 2025, and it’s not hard to imagine that Land Rover vehicles will soon follow suit. In fact, drivers can expect six pure electric variants of Land Rover vehicles to hit the market across the next five years.

There’s a lot to be excited about in Land Rover’s upcoming lineup, and this car is just the beginning of a larger trend in amazing e-mobility options. If you’d like even more reasons to be excited about Land Rover’s electric vehicle options, then swing by Land Rover of Alexandria today!
